My work is inspired by my childhood, my families exodus from Cuba, the stories told around our dinner table, and the sensual music/ dance of my culture.
I am often examining traditional myths, and stereotypes, related to gender, sexual desire. and power dynamics within relationships. I use forms found in nature and from my own perceptions, distorted and imaginative, creating spaces in which characters and narratives exist. Sometimes I begin from one of my photographs, a drawing, or a dream.
Shapes and subjects merge from each other, as I build, cover, and remove, intuitively, constructing imagined worlds, often inhabited by magical figures.
Often I will come back to a painting or photograph and cover parts and leave parts until it starts to tell me what it should be. I am always thinking about colors, shapes, balance, and intuitive composition.
